A. O. Riemann

November 2, 1888 — September 27, 1974

A. O. Riemann, 87, president of the board of directors and manager of the former Crawford Store, died Friday evening, September 27, 1974, at City Hospital where he had been a patient for three weeks.  He had been in ill health for several months.

Mr. Riemann retired as associate manager of the store and president of the board of directors on December 31, 1963, but continued as president of the store and chairman of the board of directors for some time after that.  He became assistant manager and member of the board of directors when the store was incorporated in 1913 with Charles Fahr as president and E. J. Werle as manager.  He was named president of the board in 1954.

Born on November 2, 1888, at Buenos Aires, Argentina, South America, he was a son of Franz and Elizabeth Schutz Riemann.  He moved to Meadville as a child when his family moved here in 1893.  In 1902, he was employed as an errand boy in the Charles Fahr Dry Goods Store, working there until he became affiliated with the Crawford Store.

On August 4, 1930, Mr. Riemann married Alice I. Moon.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, served on the church board, first as a deacon, then as an elder and later was named elder emeritus.  He taught Sunday school for 50 years at St. Paul's Church and was superintendent of Denny Union Sunday School for 12 years and was named to life membership on the Sunday School's board of directors.  He also taught the adult Sunday school class at Mercy United Chruch of Christ at Saegertown for about 10 years.  Mr. Riemann was cofounder with his brothers, the Rev. Walter Riemann and Arthur Riemann; and others of the Erie Bible Conderence in 1929 and was elected treasurer of the conference and continued in that position until 1969.  He later served as member of the board of directors of the conference.  He was a member of the Christian Business Men's Committee of Meadville and with other members conducted religious services at the Crawford County Jail.

Survivors include his widow; two sons, Paul A. of Madison, NJ and Robert G. of Middleton, NY; a sister, Mrs. Theodore (Frieda) Fox of Meadville; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
