Alfred David Weiss

Alfred David Weiss, 87, of Meadville, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 at Wesbury United Methodist Community.
He was born January 31st, 1930, in Vienna, Austria, to Bela and Adele Berlin Weiss. The family emigrated to the United States via Paris in 1938-39. Alfred studied at Purdue University and the University of Chicago before receiving his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University. He then received his M.D. from the Indiana University Medical School. He served his internship and residency with the National Public Health Service in New York City, where he met and married the love of his life, Anne Kelly. She survives.
Alfred spent the next four years doing research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda,
MD. As much as he enjoyed research, he missed seeing patients; so in 1959, he moved his young family to Massachusetts, where he joined the staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Trained in neurology and otology, he became the first otoneurologist on staff at these two hospitals. Later, he moved into private practice. He also taught residents from the Harvard University Medical School and served as a consultant for NASA through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Following retirement, he and Anne moved to Meadville, PA, to be closer to family.
Alfred leaves three children: Margaret (Weiss) Brooks, Will Maitland Weiss and Elizabeth Weiss Ozorak; six grandchildren: Colin, Toby, Emma, Alexandra, Victoria and Nicholas; and three great-grandchildren: Elba, Daniel and Rowan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Adolph Weiss.
Alfred was a passionate lifelong learner and a devotee of dogs, opera, cars, computers and good food and wine. He was an Eagle Scout in his teens, a scoutmaster in his thirties, and later in life, a member of the Meadville Rotary Club, the Roundtable and the Literary Union. He will be remembered for his robust sense of humor and his forceful opinions.
A date will be chosen in the future for a celebration of Alfred’s life.
