Alice M. Virtue, 88, of Meadville, died Monday, February 10, 1997, at Meadville Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born in Athens Township, Crawford County, June 1, 1908, a daughter of the late George Henry and Ivey May Morgan Salmon. She married Frank W. Childs, who died in 1956 and subsequently married J. Walter Virtue on April 10, 1971. He also preceded her in death on February 12, 1990.
She had attended Taylor Stand School and Bloomfield High School. She and her husband operated Childs Welding and Machine Shop of Guys Mills for thirty years, where she was also Way Master and a Notary Public. Previously, she had operated the Guy House Hotel in Guys Mills for two years. She was an active church worker and had received her conversion on November of 1925. She was a former Sunday School Teacher, she organized the bi-weekly worship services at Holland Towers, and she was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. Her hobby was making hooked rugs having completed over 40.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Cecile) Stewart of Meadville, Mrs. Dwight (Lucile) Stallard of Conneaut Lake and Mrs. Fred (Marilyn) Mears of Meadville; a son, Norman C. Childs of Olney, IL; a step-daughter, Mrs. Earl (Janet) Smith of Meadville; a step-son, James Virtue of Halstead, PA; eleven grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; one niece and four nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Ray J. Salmon and two infant grandchildren.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Union Cemetery, Guys Mills.
