Alice J. Waid

Alice J. Waid, 88, of North East and formerly of 552 E. College St., Meadville, died Saturday, February 8, 2003 at her residence.

She was born May 1, 1914 in Busti, NY, a daughter of the late Mortimer and Anna Faust Wooden.  She married Andy F. Waid December 18, 1948 and he preceded her in death July 26, 1992.

She was a graduate of Bradford High School and the former Meadville Commercial College.  She first worked at Talon and subsequently worked at the Crawford County Court House in the Register and Recorders office.  Later, she worked at the Shafer Law Firm for a number of years, doing title searches.  She was also the Matron of the Crawford County Jail when her husband served as county sheriff.  She was formerly active with the Crawford County Republican Women and the local chapter of the March of Dimes, serving as fundraising chairperson.  She enjoyed doing crafts, needlework, and had been an avid reader.

She was a longtime member of Stone United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Julie Welsh of North East, nieces, nephews, and many friends.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Rowland.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.  A funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. David Waldo, Pastor of Greenfield Baptist Church, North East officiating.

Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.
