Allen R. Moon, 85, a patient at Wesbury United Methodist Community, of Meadville, a former Crawford County school superintendent, died Tuesday, September 1, 1992, at Wesbury after a long illness.
He was born in Jackson Center, Mercer County, October 23, 1906, a son of J. Rankin and Elfie B. Turner Moon. He married Barbara Jack, March 9, 1957. She survives.
He retired in 1972 as Crawford County school superintendent after six years of service. He previously was employed as an assistant county superintendent from 1954 to 1966 and principle of Cochranton schools from 1935 to 1954. He was a teacher and athletic coach at Cochranton from 1929 to 1935.
He was a member of Stone United Methodist Church since 1967. He was a former member of Cochranton United Methodist Church and its Sunday school superintendent for 25 years. He was past president of the Crawford County Unit of the American Cancer Society and a past district chairman of the Boy Scouts. He was a former United Way volunteer. He was a graduate of Mercer High School and Allegheny College in 1929. He received his masters degree of education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1940 and did post graduate work at Grove City College and Pennsylvania State University. He served as first lieutenant in the US Army during World War II.
He was a member of several organizations including Cochranton Masonic Lodge 790; New Castle Scottish Rite Consistory; Zem Zem Shrine Temple, Erie; Crawford County Shrine Club; Solomon Royal Arch Chapter, Meadville; Antioch Conclave, Knight of the Red Cross of Constantine; the Royal Order of Scotland; and the Cochranton American Legion. He was inducted into the Allegheny College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.
Survivors including his wife are five sisters, Madeline Roper of Clearwater, FL, Della Dick of Yucaipa, CA, Florence Campbell of Grove City, Blanche McLearn of Stoneboro and Lucille Urmson of Transfer; five brothers, Kenneth V. of Jackson Center, Wallace E. of Williamsport, L. Raymond of Mercer, Rev. Paul R. of Pontiac, MI and J. Russell of Belle Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Perry Moon.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
