Alton E. Smith, 82, formerly of Calvin St., Meadville and a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Community, died there Wednesday, January 07, 2004.
He was born in Cambridge Springs May 25, 1921 a son of Carl and Margaret Flick Smith. He married Harriet E. Murfin May 25, 1966 and she preceded him in death May 13, 2002.
He worked as a security officer at Pick-N-Pay in Garfield Heights, OH and then subsequently at Lord Corp. in Saegertown. He previously worked as a welder at Square “D” Co. in Cleveland for 25 years. In his retirement, he worked part time for a few years in the Maintenance Dept. of the Crawford County Redevelopment Authority.
He attended welding school in Cleveland and was a veteran of World War II with the US Army in the European Theater of operations. He was a member of VFW Post #169, Venango and was of the protestant faith.
Survivors, include: three stepdaughters, Etta Cooper of Seneca, Kay Brown and her husband Neil of Meadville and Beth Erdmann and her husband H. William of Corinth, TX; eight step grandchildren and nine step great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a stepfather, Harvey Calhoun and a sister Cleo Chadwell.
A graveside service will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Venango Cemetery. Burial will be with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Wesbury United Methodist Community, 31 N. Park Avenue, Meadville, PA 16335.
