Andrew L. Lutz, 82, of Meadville, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at his home with his loving wife, Ingrid, by his side. He was born on May 26, 1938 in Jamestown, NY, a son of Gerald and Olive Lutz. He married Ingrid Ursula Honnelore Belitz on August 22, 1959. Andy was a graduate of Jamestown, NY High School and attended the Russian language school at Syracuse University in 1956. He subsequently served in the U.S. Air Force in Intelligence Service until 1962. Following his military service, he attended Edinboro State College and received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1966. Andy had a life-long love of education and subsequently received a Masters Degree in Secondary Education from Edinboro, a Masters Degree in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh, a Masters Degree in School Administration from Edinboro and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Gannon University. He taught math at Saegertown High School and at the Junior and Senior High School in Meadville and Computer Science at the Vocational Technical School. He directed the countys adult education program at the Vocational Technical School and also was a computer science instructor at Thiel College. He coached Junior High 7th and 8th grade basketball and tutored individual students throughout his teaching career as well as being a math tutor for the READ program. He retired in 1993 after 30 years of teaching. Andy enjoyed fishing, tennis, golf and cooking. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and Africa. He was a lifetime member of Phi Delta Kappa International, a lifetime member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and worked on the Membership Committee on both the local and state level. He also worked with the Pennsylvania State Education Association developing educational programs and testing in computer science. He was fluent in both Russian and German. Andy was a member of the Cochranton Masonic Lodge 790, Scottish Rite Bodies of New Castle Consistory where he received his 32nd degree, a lifetime member of Zem Zem Shrine Temple in Erie, a lifetime member of the Elks, a member of the Italian Civic Club and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006. He was a former member of Meadville First Presbyterian Church, serving on the Board of Deacons, as well as a Sunday School teacher and basketball coach for youth. His smile, willingness to help others, whether in education or other endeavors, and his positive attitude and zest for life, will always be remembered by those who loved him. Andy is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Ingrid of 61 years; his sons Andrew L. Lutz, Jr. of Montclair, New Jersey and John S. Lutz of Kernersville, North Carolina; grandchildren Sophia E. and Jack A. Lutz; his brother and sister-in-law Hans and Reni and nephew, Andrew Hannebohm, residing in Europe; and several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Sunday, February 28th from 1 to 3 PM at the ROBERT W. WAID FUNERAL HOME, 581 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE where the memorial service will be following at 3 PM with the Reverend Dr. Brian Jensen, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating and military honors provided by VFW Post 2006. The wearing of masks is required. Family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to any Veterans Association. The family wishes to thank Hospice of Crawford County and extend sincerest appreciation to Annette Vincent and Richard Schmalzried for their truly compassionate support during Andrews final hours.
