Andrew P. Mattis, 96, of Meadville, died Friday, May 20, 2016 at the Marquette Hospice House.
He was born July 2, 1919 in Lemont Furnace, PA, a son of Andrew and Mary Punday Mattis. He married Katherine Knierman September 23, 1946 and she survives.
Andrew was a 1938 valedictorian graduate of Randolph High School. He was a World War II Veteran with the U.S. Army serving from 1941 to 1945 in the 29th Division in the European Theater of Operations.
Andrew worked in production and inspection at Talon for 43 years. He was a long-time member of the Black Ash Sportsman’s Club, a life-time member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville, and a member of the East Mead Fire Hall where he worked the bingo games for over 20 years. He enjoyed shooting, hunting, trapping, gardening, yard work, and loved cars.
He was a member of St. Hippolyte Roman Catholic Church and was a former Eucharistic minister.
Survivors, in addition his loving wife Katherine of almost 70 years, include a daughter, Mary Lou Young of Meadville; three sons, Paul Mattis and his wife Elaine of Meadville, Thomas Mattis and his wife Marylou of Cochranton, and Jeffery Mattis and his wife Allison of Meadville; six grandchildren, Kimberly Wilcox and her husband Darrel, Adam Mattis and his wife Rachael, Ann Mattis, Steven Mattis and his fiancée Kathryn Beaty, Molly Smith and her husband Brandon, and Jennifer Cain and her husband Christopher; two step-grandchildren, Lydia and Luke Sleeman; three great-grandchildren, Derik Wilcox and his wife Erin, Dallas Wilcox, and Sara Bilal; one step-great-granddaughter, Stephanie Biondo; one great-great-grandson, Cameron Wilcox; two step-great-great-grandchildren, Devyn and Dylan Biondo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Joseph Mattis and three sisters, Mary Briggs, Anna Stibrik, and Helen Orr.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville with a scripture prayer service at 7:15 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Hippolyte Church, 25997 State Hwy 27, Guys Mills with Fr. Daniel Prez as Celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Hippolyte Cemetery with military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville.
