Antal J. Szabo, 81, of Conneaut Lake, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at the Meadville Medical Center.
He was born in Cleveland, OH June 8, 1928 a son of John Z. and Barbara Lechner Szabo. He married Rosemarie M. Rakoczy August 9, 1952 and she survives.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was injured in the battle at the Chosin Reservoir December 12, 1950 during the Korean War. He was a member of 1st Marine Div., 7th Marines Fox/Easy Companies, member of US Marine Corps Chosin Few and was recipient of 2 Purple Hearts and 1 Bronze Star. He was also a member of the Purple Heart Association.
He worked as an industrial engineer. He was a member of St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Church, Saegertown, member of the Knights of Columbus Council #627 Conneaut, OH where he received his Third degree and the Leo J. Kane Assembly, Ashtabula, OH where he received his Fourth degree. He was a former member of the Good Samaritans and Pro-Life coordinator at Our Lady Queen of the Americas Roman Catholic Church, Conneaut Lake.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Rosemarie, include four children, Antal J. Szabo II, Susan Pelotte and her husband Lawrence, David Szabo and his wife Tomme and Stephen Szabo and his wife Tina; five grandchildren, Desiree, Christa, Sara, Andrea and Joseph; one great grandson, Brayden Antal; two brothers, Joseph Szabo and Louie Szabo and his wife Barbara; a brother-in-law, John Rakoczy and his wife Carol; a sister-in-law, MaryAnn Rakoczi and several nieces and nephews. His family was his biggest joy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Welch and Katherine Szabo; two brothers, Stephen Szabo and John Szabo and his wife Barbara; a sister-in-law, Ella Szabo and a brother-in-law, Frank Rakoczi.
Calling hours will be Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Waid-Coleman Funeral Home, 12422 Conneaut Lake Road, Conneaut Lake with a Scripture Prayer Service at 4 p.m.
Latin Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Church, 22 Renner Street, Saegertown.
Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery, Chardon, OH.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
