Anthony N. (Andy) Kurt, 95, formerly of Hatch Hill Road, Meadville for over 62 years and a resident of Soldiers and Sailors Home, Erie since 2008, died there, Sunday, January 11, 2015.
He was born in Meadville June 2, 1919 a son of Emil and Mary Mohra Kurt. He married Helen Zajac January 12, 1946 and she preceded him in death October 22, 2005.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Army in the European Theater of Operations. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and other service related medals and citations. After the war, he was a farmer and later worked in logging, owning his own sawmill and operating Kurt Lumber for many years. He was a member of St. Hippolyte Roman Catholic Church. He was an avid bowler, participating in the Plaza Lanes Senior League for several years and sponsored both men’s and women’s softball teams in the area as well as bowling teams.
Survivors include a son, Andrew Kurt, Sr. and his wife Elaine of Meadville; five grandchildren, Debbie Crowe and her husband Ed of Meadville; Lori Hollabaugh and her husband Shawn of Guys Mills, Andrew (Jim) Kurt, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Meadville, Kevin Kurt and his wife Tricia of Cambridge Springs and Linda Weaver and her husband Jim of Lincolnton, NC; ten great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Josephine Smith, Mary Ann Smith and Louise Tenney and two brothers, Oscar Kurt and Gene Kurt.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville with a Scripture Prayer Service at 6:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Hippolyte Roman Catholic Church, 26012 N. Frenchtown Rd., Guys Mills with Fr. Daniel Prez as Celebrant.
Interment with military honors provided by Harm Jan Huidekoper VFW Post #2006 will be in St. Hippolyte Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
