Anthony J. (Tony) Smith, 78, of Meadville died Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Meadville Medical Center.
He was born in Meadville May 5, 1932 a son of the late Homer F. and Anna E. Weidenbach Smith. He married Barbara J. Spencer April 18, 1959 and she survives.
He worked with his father at Homer F. Smith and Son Coal Co., then at Greenville Steel Car, painting box cars, at the Trailer Factory in 5th ward, Meadville, for 33 years at Talon Inc., Plant 7 and then for Adessa Car Auction in Mercer until his retirement last year. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the US Army. He was a 34 year member of Stone United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School, was the Sunday School treasurer and helped with the vacation bible school for many years. He also volunteered to transport children from Fairview/Fairmont to Wesley Woods United Methodist Church camp for many years.
He was a life-long resident of Kerrtown and was a long-time member of Kerrtown Community Building/VRDA, where he served as Trustee, Vice President and President. He also volunteered at Kerrtown bingo for many years. He was loved by all who knew him and was a wonderful husband and father. He adored his children, grandchildren and two kittens, Sunny and Nookers. He loved animals and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping with his family.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Barbara of 51 years, include: a daughter, Toni-Lynn Flinn and her husband Ted of Guys Mills; a son, Jamie A. Smith of Oldenburg, Germany; four grandchildren, Jordanna Nicole Smith, McKenzie Paige Smith, Noah Sebastian Smith and Kylie Rayne Flinn; a brother, Fred H. Smith and his wife Jill of Linesville and a brother-in-law, Emory Lee Chatley of Meadville.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.
The funeral service will follow Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Gerald Murphy, officiating.
The family suggests memorials be made to Stone United Methodist Church, Campership Fund, 956 S. Main Street, Meadville, PA 16335.
