Army Pvt. Dan R. Byham, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard R. Byham of Guys Mills, was reported killed Wednesday in Vietnam by sniper fire.
His father, who is postmaster at Guys Mills, said military authorities informed the family of their son's death yesterday afternoon. The only details were that it occurred while Pvt. Byham was on patrol in the Mekong Delta about 45 miles south of Saigon.
Pvt. Byham arrived in the Delta area about December 15 for a year's tour of duty in Vietnam. He had completed a 15 day leave at home on December 11.
He attended Randolph-East Mead High School and received his high school diploma through additional studies while taking basic training at Fort Jackson, SC. He entered the Army in mid-1968 and completed advanced infantry training at Ft. Polk, LA.
Prior to entering the Army, he had been employed by his grandfather, Rae M. Byham, and later at the Livsey Brothers Lumber Mill on Tamarack Drive.
Surviving, besides his parents, are a sister, Mrs. Howard (Bonnie) Proper of McKean and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Rae Byham of Guys Mills.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
