Arthur Victor Abell, 55, RD 4, Meadville, pressroom foreman at the Meadville Tribune, died at 10:24 a.m. Sunday, February 17, 1963, at Spencer Hospital after an illness of three months. Death was attributed to acute leukemia.
A native of Meadville where he was born July 8, 1907, a son of Charles E. and Charlotta VanHorn Abell, Mr. Abell had been a Tribune pressman since 1926, making him the newspaper's second oldest employee in years of service. He had been department foreman for several years.
He was a member at Stone United Methodist Church and its Official Board. He had served as an usher for many years and was a member of the Methodist Men's organization and the church school.
Mr. Abell was a member of Vernon Central Volunteer Fire Department, Meadville Elks Lodge 219, and was a charter member of the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants Union, Local 338. During his years of membership in the local he had served as secretary-treasurer, vice president and president.
On November 13, 1937, he married the former Helen E. McMahan of Greenville.
Surviving are his widow; two sons, David C., a senior at Pennsylvania State University, and Daniel S. at home; a daughter, Charlotte Ann at home; a sister, Mrs. Luvilla Dortman of Meadville, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and Tuesday at the Waid Funeral Home where the Elks Lodge will hold a memorial service tonight at 7, and where services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Albert Marriott, retired pastor of Stone United Methodist Church, assisted by Randolph Lunsford, associate pastor.
