Betty J. Gilson, 85, formerly of Benson Avenue, Meadville and a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Community died there Saturday, December 17, 2016. She was born September 28, 1931 in Meadville a daughter of Ray N. and Helen M. Bowes Daniels. She married Jack Frederick Gilson July 22, 1950 and he preceded her in death May 26, 2004. She was a 1949 graduate of Cambridge Springs High School, attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and graduated from Edinboro University with a Bachelors degree in Education. She worked as an elementary school teacher for 23 years in the Crawford Central School District retiring in 1993. She was a former member of Cambridge Springs United Methodist Church and had attended Stone United Methodist Church. She was a member and volunteer of the former YWCA, a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and former member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed reading and doing Tai Chi. She is survived by a son, Jay Gilson and his wife Cynthia of Cortland, OH; four daughters, Margaret Alamadine of Hesperia, CA, Genevieve Dunkle of Sebring, FL, April Hall and her husband Daniel, Sr. of Meadville and June Bateman and her husband Mark of Sebring, FL; eleven grandchildren, Meghan Alamadine, Amina Peterson, James Meyer, Sara Gilson, Jeffrey Gilson, Daniel Hall, Jr., Brian Gilson, Jenna Gilson, Katie Mehling, Kelsey Mehling and Christian Dunkle; eleven great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Jones of Sarasota, FL; a niece, Jackie Jones and a nephew, Jeff Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son-in-law, Douglas Dunkle. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 1 3 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Sarah Roncolato, Pastor of Stone United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery, Meadville.
