Blair Hanson

November 2, 1915 — February 6, 1994

Blair Hanson, 78, of Wesbury United Methodist Community, a retired college professor, died Sunday, February 6, 1994, at Wesbury following a period of declining health.

She was born in Bloomington, IL, November 2, 1915, a daughter of Frank and Harriet Roman Cavender Hanson.  She never married.

She retired in 1981, after 42 years as professor of modern languages at Allegheny College, where she also served as chairperson of the Department of Modern Languages for 27 years and secretary to the faculty for five years.

She completed her undergraduate studies at Lycee de Jeunes Filles, St. Cloud, France; and Washington University, St. Louis, MO.  She then went to graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison; where she received her PhD in 1939.

She was a member of numerous collegiate and education associations and organizations.  She was a member of the American Cancer Society of Crawford County and a former board member of its Reach to Recovery Program, a founding member of the Crawford County READ Program and served on the first Literacy Council.  She also was a member of the Friends of the Library.  She enjoyed music, art, theater, opera, travel, people, reading and walking.

Survivors include a sister, Phyllis C. Hawkins of Cuyahoga Falls, OH and two nieces.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank B. Hanson, Jr.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
