Carl Frederick Heeschen

December 28, 1916 — July 24, 1994

Carl Frederick Heeschen, 77, an artist and a leading conservationist, was a former professor of art and art history at Allegheny College.

Heeschen, of Meadville, died July 24, 1994, at home of pancreatic cancer.

He was born December 28, 1916, in Davenport, IA, a son of the late Conrad Max and Paula Bickel Heeschen.  He married Marie Lewis June 23, 1944, in Naples, Italy.  She survives.

He received his BA and Masters of art degrees from the University of Iowa.  He taught at Randolph-Macon School for Women in Lynchburg, Virginia before serving in the US Amry Medical Corps in Northern Africa, Italy, France and England during World War II.

He also taught at Ball State College in Munice, Indiana before coming to Allegheny in 1947.  He retired from teaching at Allegheny in 1982.

He designed and carved the limestone relief panels depicting area agriculture and industry at the entrance to the Crawford County Court House.

He was a long-time member of Meadville Unitarian Universalist Church, the Crawford County Historical Society, the Meadville Shade Tree Commission and a board member of the Meadville Council on the Arts.  He was a member of the Citizens' Round Table of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and of a number of peace groups, including Veterans for Peace and Meadville People for Peace.

He was an avid flower gardener whose property was a life's work of art.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Conrad Heeschen of Wilton, ME and Anthony Heeschen of South Portland, ME; three daughters, Judith Heeschen of Meadville, Paula Heeschen of Stroudsburg, PA and Laura Heeschen of Pittsburgh; a brother, Paul Heeschen and a sister, Louise Strohbehn, both of California; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
