Crawford County's oldest Democrat died at City Hospital yesterday, almost a month after her 99th birthday.
Mrs. Caroline Daniels, of Meadville, had been a patient about 2 1/2 months.
Mrs. Daniels, widow of Warren P. Daniels, an East Mead Township farmer, was the former Caroline Perine, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Perine.
She was born July 23, 1856, at the corner of Limber Road and Highland Avenue. At the time, there were no houses nearer than the Odd Fellows Home.
A graduate of the Meadville Academy, she was the first teacher at the home in the 1870s. She also taught at these area schools: Frew, Pierson, Orris, Church, Wayland and Frenchtown.
Mrs. Daniels' main interests were the Democrat Party and the Unitarian Church, of which she was a member for 87 years.
An avid reader, the retired teacher was a book collector and amassed a good-sized library, including some first editions. She gave away many books, including a collection of the famous McGuffey Readers, from which she taught at one time.
Mrs. Daniels lived at Wayland for 35 years and lived with her son, Homer, for the past 29 years. Her husband died August 16, 1921.
She formerly was active for many years on the Ladies Advisory Committee of City Hospital.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
