Carson Forest Mertz, Jr. of Sandy Lake. passed away Friday, February 17th at home. He was 90 years old.
Carson was born on March 29th, 1932, in Windber, PA, to the late Carson Mertz Sr. and Farrell Krause Mertz. He was a 1950 graduate of Stoneboro High School.
He married Barbara Clayton Mertz on December 5, 1953. The couple lived briefly in Long Island, NY, during Carson’s enlistment in the Air Force, but later permanently settled in Sandy Lake.
Carson was an excellent high school basketball player in his years at Stoneboro High School. After high school graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force and served during the Korean War on the island of Guam. He spent many years working at Stoneboro Lake where he worked on the construction of the docks and the cabins. An exceptional craftsman, he made additions to his home, including adding rooms, a deck, and a garage. He worked for many years at ITT Reznor where he was a draftsman.He also served on the Lakeview School District’s School Board. He was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. After retiring, he enjoyed fishing, golfing, and woodworking. He made several beautiful pieces that are cherished by his family. He was a member of the Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church.
Carson was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Barbara. He was also preceded in death by his much loved son, Steve, his sisters, Marjorie and Emajean, and two nieces and two nephews.
He is survived by his daughter, Julianne (Graham, NC), his daughter-in-law, Denise Mertz (Sandy Lake, PA), six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A service will be held on Monday, February 20th, at the Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church. Calling hours will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a service following at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church are welcomed.
