Charles Craig Underwood

Charles Craig Underwood, 80, of Meadville, and a patient of Wesbury United Methodist Community since June 1997, died Monday, December 1, 1997 at Meadville Medical Center following an illness of several months.

He was born August 5, 1917 in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Charles S. and Amelia Ochsenhirt Underwood.  He married Averyl Wheeling on June 25, 1949.  She survives.

Mr. Underwood was a 1935 graduate of South Hills High School, Pittsburgh.  He worked at American Viscose for 44 years, retiring in 1980 as a laboratory technician.  He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations in the US Navy from 1943 to 1945.  He was active in many Masonic Organizations and Shrine Organizations.  He was a member of the Meadville Wolves Club.  He was past president of the Avtex Credit Union and a member of the board of directors of the Meadville Area Federal Credit Union since 1953.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1935 and former Elder.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Ronald C. Underwood of Chesapeake, VA; one daughter, Sheryl U. Collins of Erie and two grandchildren, Tyler and Andrea Collins.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
