On Wednesday, March 8, 2023, Charles Derwent Hovis, 90 of Meadville, PA passed away peacefully at home comforted by his daughters. While his body succumbed to old age, his mind and spirit remained forever young. He was born June 10, 1932 to John and Blanche (Bell) Hovis in Cochranton, PA.
Chuck graduated in 1950 from Meadville Area High School, playing the clarinet in the MASH Marching Band, and then enlisted in the Air Force because he had “nothing better to do.” He served from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War as a military police officer. After serving his country, Chuck attended Erie’s Commercial College and Penn State University receiving his associate degree in management and accounting. He worked at several businesses in Meadville during his career. Through the years, Chuck was a member of Watson Run Presbyterian Church, the Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, and a lifetime member of AMVETS and the American Legion. Chuck will be remembered as a caring husband, loving father, doting grandfather and fine friend. He was happiest when he was with his family and friends and was always searching for his perfect convertible. Chuck enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting and loved just taking drives in his car to see new places.
Chuck is preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou (Wilkinson) Hovis; sons Charles D. Hovis, Jr and Gregg D. Hovis; his grandson Alex Gregory Hovis; his son-in-law Michael J. Pitell; his brother Robert Hovis; his stepsister Marion DeHoff; his stepfather William E. Clifford, and his mother Blanche (Bell) Clifford. He is survived by his daughter Lisa Renee (Hovis) Pitell of Wexford, PA and daughter Lori Lynn (Hovis) Johnson, and her husband Keith P Johnson of Uniontown, OH. He will always be remembered by his beloved grandchildren: Tess Victoria Johnson of Wilmington, NC; Grace Lilly Johnson of Sneads Ferry, NC; Sarah Elizabeth Pitell of Pittsburgh, PA; and Matthew Alex Pitell of Wexford, PA.
Family and friends are welcome to gather at Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville, PA on Saturday, March 11, 2023 from 1 PM to 3 PM. Service will immediately follow with the Rev. Dan Corll officiating and then internment at Greendale Cemetery.
