Charles I. Marsh

Charles I. Marsh, 87, of Meadville, died Thursday, August 13, 2015 at the Crawford County Care Center.

He was born July 14, 1928 in Woodcock Township, Crawford County, a son of Lee and Elsie Gable Marsh and raised by Carl and Virginia Mook.  He married Ruth T. Winters October 2, 1976 and she preceded him in death November 9, 2012.

Charles attended school in Linesville through 3rd grade and then attended school in Chardon, Ohio.  At the age of 16 he went to work on his uncle’s farm and at age 17 moved to Meadville and worked at the Meadville Distilling Company.  He subsequently drove truck and then entered the service in 1950 in the U.S. Army National Guard, Mortar Company, 28th Division of Meadville and was called to active duty serving in Germany during the Korean War.  He was honorably discharged August 31, 1953.

Following military service, Charles worked for City Coal and Supply Company in Meadville for 4 years and then drove truck for several area companies.  In 1970, Charles went to work for Adams Pipeline Company in Meadville from where he retired as reclamation supervisor.

He was a member of Saegertown United Methodist Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping at Brookdale Campground.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane M. Courson and her husband Larry of Meadville; seven step-children, Michael C. Rankin and his wife Maryann of Cambridge Springs, Gary E. Rankin and his wife Delora of Townville, James W. Rankin and his wife Lesli of Houston, TX, Larry D. Rankin of Meadville, Paul A. Lewis and his wife Lori of Clarksville, TN, Connie R. Gill of New Orleans, LA, and Janet I. Lewis of Seattle, WA; a sister-in-law, Karen Dolk of Lafayette, IN; two brothers-in-law, William Winters and his wife Kathy of Saegertown and Robert Winters and his wife Sue of Meadville; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two stepsons, David and Daniel Rankin.

Calling hours are today (Saturday) from noon to 2 p.m. at the Robert W Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville where the funeral and committal service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph C. Rial, Jr., Associate Pastor of Saegertown United Methodist Church, officiating.  Military honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville.

Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.
