Charles W. Gill, 75, former mayor of Meadville and a long-time local business, died Sunday morning at City Hospital after an extended illness.
The Meadville man was best known here for his service as mayor from 1930 to 1933, but he also had served as a deputy collector of internal revenue stationed here, and he had been interested in numerous community activities.
He operated a book and stationary business in the Lafayette Block here for more than ten years and spent about the same period of time as a member of the education-business staff of the Chautauqua Institute.
A Democrat, he was the city's chief executive during the so-called depression years. He instituted various relief programs and set up WPA and other projects which were carried on during the early and mid 1930s in conjunction with the federal government.
He long had been an active member of Stone Church and of its Official Board. He taught the Beacon Light Class of the Church School for many years and served as teacher of the Men's Bible Class for more than two years.
Charles W. Gill was a native of Huntington County, PA. He was graduated from California Normal School of PA and Allegheny College, the latter in 1907. He was a public school teacher in Huntington and Washington counties and served as a member of the faculties of Ohio University and Allegheny College.
Survivors include the widow; three children, Tom of Danville, VA, Madeleine of Maplewood, NJ and Norman of Pheonix, AZ and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
