Christopher G. Katope

Christopher G. (Chris) Katope, 84, of 705 Alden St. Meadville, died Monday, October 28, 2002 at the Crawford County Care Center.

He was born in Lowell, Mass. April 1, 1918, a son of the late George & Bessie Savas Katopis.  He married Marjorie Spencer King June 6, 1942 and she survives.

He attended the Univ. of Louisville, 1939-41 and then served with the U. S. Navy during World War II.  He received an MA in English from the Univ. of Chicago in 1947, then was instructor of English at Westminster College, Fulton, MO, 1947-50, and an instructor of English at Allegheny College, 1952-54.  He received his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt Univ. in 1954.  He was Assistant Professor of English at Allegheny, 1954-62, Associate Professor, 1962-69, and Professor, 1969-1983, retiring in 1983.  He subsequently was named Professor Emeritus.  He was a Fulbright Professor at Athens College, Athens, Greece in 1959-60, and Anatolia College, Thessalonika Greece, 1960-61.  He was an author, editor, and contributor of published articles in professional journals.

He attended Christ Church Episcopal, Meadville.

Survivors in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Theodora Katope Rowland of Saegertown; a son, Christopher Lawrence Katope and his wife Sharon of Trenton, NJ; Two grandchildren, Michael and Mark Rowland; and a sister, Callio Mallos of Louisville, KY.  He was preceded in death by four older sisters.

Private services for the family will be held at a later date.
