Col. Joseph L. Parlas, Jr., USA, Ret., 89, of Conneaut Lake died Friday, May 3, 2019 at UPMC-Hamot, Erie. He was born January 18, 1930 in Youngstown, OH a son of Joseph L. and Edna Carter Parlas, Sr. He married Matilda Elizabeth Fisher October 20, 1951 and she preceded him in death January 18, 2015. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was also stationed in Italy serving for over 31 years in the US Army retiring as a Colonel in 1982. He was the recipient of several awards and citations including the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Flying Cross and was a member of the Infantry Hall of Fame and the Officer Candidate Hall of Fame. He was a member of the French Creek Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, the Linesville VFW Post #7842, Conneaut Lake American Legion Post #587 and the Lake Lutheran Church. He was a 1970 graduate of the University of Nebraska. In his retirement, he was a professor of economics at the former Alliance College in Cambridge Springs and worked as the Port Meadville Airport manager in the mid-1980s. He is survived by a daughter, Judith Anne Meadow and her husband Lt. Col. Philip B. Meadow, D.O., F.A.C.P. of Midland, GA; two sons, Commander Joseph L. Parlas III and his wife Parvin of San Diego, CA and Lt. Col. Lawrence W. Parlas and his wife Lisa of Cape Canaveral, FL; seven grandchildren, Rachael Elizabeth Meadow and her husband Zachary Kibbee, SFC Joshua Ariel Meadow, David Nathaniel Meadow, Benjamin Daniel Meadow and his wife Heather Marie Kozlik-Meadow, Aaron Michael Meadow and his wife Grace, Anna Melissa Ensley and her husband James and Tiina Marie Parlas; five great grandchildren, Jace Nathaniel Meadow, Lillian Capri Meadow, Abigail Faye Kibbee, Everet Nathanial Meadow and Elizabeth Jane Ensley; a step-grandson, Shawn Dian; a step-granddaughter, Leila Rose Dian and his close friend and companion, Paula Winslow of Conneaut Lake. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery L. Parlas and a sister, Fay Parlas. Calling hours will be Monday, May 6th from 2-4 p.m. at the Waid-Coleman Funeral Home, Inc., 12422 Conneaut Lake Road, Conneaut Lake. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Benjamin Travis, Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
