David L. Bates, 63, of Orchard Place, Meadville, died Friday, March 25, 2005 at the Meadville Medical Center following an extended illness.
He was born in Meadville, October 2, 1941 a son of Dr. Richard Lee and Dorothy Lawson Bates. He married Margaret M. Smith August 26, 2000 and she survives.
He was a 1959 graduate of Meadville High School and a 1964 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University. He also completed some graduate studies at the University of Rochester.
He was the owner and operator of Bates Coin Co. where he dealt in coins, paper currency and jewelry. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a Past Chairman of its Board of Trustees. He was a life member of the American Numismatic Association, member of the American Numismatic Society, former officer of the Rochester, NY Numismatic Assoc., Past President of the Meadville Coin Club and Crawford County Antique Dealers, former member and director of Meadville Kiwanis Club, board member of Crawford Area Scholarships, Inc. and a social member and trustee of the Italian Civic Club. He enjoyed stamps, photography, carpentry, history, travel, antiques, cancer research and the stock market.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Peg, include her son Robert P. Luikart, Jr. of Fort Benning, GA; his two sons, Robert Lee Bates of Long Island, NY and Richard Lawson Bates and his wife Nicole of Washington, DC and one daughter, Elizabeth Ruth Bates of Denver, CO; one sister, Mary Lee Bates and her husband Thomas Owens of Inman, SC and one niece and two nephews.
The memorial service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 353 Chestnut St., Meadville with the Rev. Gregory Streed, Pastor and the Rev. Richard Haemer, officiating.
Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.
