David T. McKay, for 63 years prothonotary and deputy prothonotary in the Crawford County courthouse, died at his home here Friday night. He lacked two months of being 84 years old.
He went to work in the prothonotary's office in 1881 at the age of 18 and remained there until his retirement on March 5, 1944, with the exception of a six-year period as city clerk and employee of the Erie Railroad Company.
He was appointed prothonotary on March 8, 1905, at the death of his uncle, Win S. Rose, was elected in 1905 and re-elected in 1908. After 1911 he was chief deputy.
Mr. McKay was found dead late Saturday night by his son, Paul, who had returned from Fort Wayne, for a week-end visit.
Mr. McKay was educated in Meadville schools and attended Meadville Commercial College. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and the Knights of Pythias.
Surviving are two sons, Paul McKay of Fort Wayne, IN and Col. Winfield R. McKay of Sulyama, Honshu, Japan; one grandson, Seaman First Class Michael W. McKay of Chicago; a step-sister, Mrs. Catherine Jenkins of Meadville; and two half-brothers, Charles McKay of Titusville and Frank McKay of Washington state.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
