Mrs. Deeda E. VanNess, 61, of Meadville, wife of Roy H. VanNess, died Monday morning at City Hospital where she had been surgical patient since June 13.
Mrs. VanNess, former school teacher and business woman, taught at Hubbard, OH, and served as principal of the Gordon Avenue School in East Youngstown, OH, before her marriage in 1912. In 1916, she and her husband purchased the Hubbard Enterprise, a weekly paper, which they published for ten years. During that time she was active in the politics of her community.
Again in 1931, she became associated with Mr. VanNess in business when they purchased the Meadville News Company and moved to this city. They conducted this business for seven years.
Mrs. VanNess, who was born in Hubbard, OH, and spent her early life there, was a graduate of Rayen High School in Youngstown, OH, and attended Sterling-Morton School for Girls in Chicago, IL. She was the former Deeda Walters.
In Meadville, she was a member of Stone Methodist Church and taught in its Sunday school. She was a member of Golden Crown Chapter, Order of Eastern Star.
Besides her husband, Mrs. VanMarter is survived by a brother, W. J. Walters of Highland Park, IL; a sister, Mrs. C. P. Smith of Hubbard, OH and by several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Oakdale Cemetery, Hubbard, OH.
