Dickson Andrews

June 21, 1887 — July 24, 1953

Attorney Dickson Andrews, 66, Meadville city solicitor for 29 years, died suddenly at City Hospital on July 24, 1953 at 11:20 p.m.

Andrews, who had practiced law in Crawford County courts for 38 years, was known in the legal profession as one of the best authorities on municipal and school district law in the state.

As city solicitor and council clerk, he drafted scores of ordinances for the city of Meadville.

He was solicitor for West Mead Township and several other townships and served as legal counsel for at least two Crawford County school boards.  He also was noted for settlement of estates.

Born in Meadville on June 21, 1887, son of Robert and Emma Dickson Andrews, he attended Meadville public schools and was graduated from Allegheny College in 1908.

In 1915, he was graduated from Harvard Law School and was admitted to the general practice of law in the courts of Crawford County.

He opened an office in Meadville in 1915 and has practiced law here since.

He began his long record of service with the City of Meadville in 1919 when he was elected city clerk by the City Council.  He was elected city solicitor in 1924 but held the clerk position until 1928.

He served in several committees in the Republican party in Crawford County.

An active member of Stone Methodist Church, he was a member of the church official board.  He taught a Sunday school class of boys of high school for many years.

Late in World War I, he entered the Army and was stationed at Camp Johnson, FL, an officer training camp for several months.

At Allegheny College he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, national honorary scholastic fraternity, and the local chapter of Phi Gamma Delta.

He was a member of Cussewago Lodge, IOOF, and Charles N. Stafford Post, American Legion, Meadville Roundtable, and Meadville Christian Business Men's Committee.

He is survived by his widow, the former Lena Mae Brown of Chestnut Street; a daughter, Mrs. Philip Richmond of Cleveland; three sisters, Miss Florence Andrews of Meadville, Mrs. Nellie A. Lord of Meadville and Miss Ethel Andrews of Cleveland.
