Dorothy E. 'Danny' Smith

Dorothy E. “Danny” Smith, 88, of 21880 Blooming Valley Road, Meadville, died unexpectedly Tuesday December 6, 2005 at the Meadville Medical Center.

She was born in Richmond Twp. July 9, 1917, a daughter of Don and Lillian Mitchell Danforth.  She married Paul W. Smith January 27, 1948, and he preceded her in death September 28, 1993.

She was a 1936 graduate of Cambridge Springs High School, and a 1939 graduate of Meadville City Hospital School of Nursing.  She was a Captain in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II with the 22nd Station Hospital in the Pacific Theatre of operations.  She retired from City Hospital in 1977 as assistant night supervisor after 33 years of service.

Dorothy was a 50 year member of Dorothy Kimmel Post 891 American Legion now merged with Saegertown American Legion Post 205.  She had been a life member of the former City Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Assn.  She also coordinated many retirement dinners for employees of Meadville Medical Center for a number of years.  She was an active member of Stone United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women.  She enjoyed gardening and traveling.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Drumm and her husband Tom of Simpsonville, SC; two grandchildren, Carly and Steven Drumm; two nieces, Beverly Decker, and Linda Holobar and four nephews, Jim & Danny Willey, Alfred Danforth, and Dr. Dennis Smith.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Willey, two brothers, Roy and Clayton Danforth and one nephew Frank Danforth.

Calling hours will be Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Incl. 581 Chestnut St, Meadville.

The funeral service will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. William L. Brown, Associate Pastor of Stone United Methodist Church, officiating.

Entombment with military honor provided by VFW Post 2006 will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Memorials may be made to any charity of the donor’s choice.
