Dorothy R. McIntyre, 96, of Garfield Heights, OH, passed peacefully on Thursday, June 7, 2018.
She was born July 13, 1921. She was the beloved wife of 66 years of James E. McIntyre, who preceded her in death May 27, 2009.
She held degrees from Allegheny College in Biological Science and History as well as a Master’s degree from John Carroll University. Dorothy taught at John Carroll University and Shaker Heights High School before joining Orange High School’s faculty in 1968. There she spearheaded the first Advanced Placement programs and the Senior Project Program, and enriched the lives of thousands of students. Dorothy retired in 1987 but remained an active leader of the Orange Board of Education and taught part time at Cuyahoga Community College.
Second only to teaching was her commitment to volunteerism. Dorothy was a passionate advocate for The Ronald McDonald House, Meals on Wheels, a docent at the Cleveland Museum of Art and served on the boards of Orange Board of Education (as VP & President) and the Association for Continuing Education at CWRU. Dorothy created lifelong friendships with many of her students as well as innumerable people from the many organizations she served. Dorothy will be remembered for her love of family, friends and having an insatiable appetite for learning. Her life was devoted to reminding us all to never stop learning.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Brian P. McIntyre.
