Douglas F. Gawne, 82, of Meadville, died Tuesday, January 10, 1984, at Spencer Hospital after an illness of several months.
He was born May 1, 1901 at Berea, OH, a son of Robert and Mabel McCroden Gawne. He married Ruth Kohler December 23, 1934.
Formerly a switchman for the former Erie-Lackwanna Railroad, Gawne also was a flight instructor for student pilots. He also formerly operated a diner and service station at the corner of Park Avenue and Walnut Street.
Gawne reportedly was the first fire chief for Vernon Central Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors, in addition to her wife, include three sons, M. Robert of Meadville, Douglas F., Jr. of Meadville and Edgar J. of Warren, OH; a brother, Evan of Escondido, CA; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Harry.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
