Douglas N. Melby

November 23, 1933 — May 10, 2002

Douglas N. Melby, 68, of Conneaut Lake, PA, died Friday, May 10, 2002 at UPMC Horizon Greenville Hospital, Greenville, PA.

He was born in Aitkin, MN, November 23, 1933 a son of the late Nels C. and Gurtrude Howatt Melby and stepmother, Ruth Olafson Melby.  He married Carolyn M. Allgeier, August 22, 1964 and she survives.

He retired in 1993 as principal of Alice Schafer Elementary School, Linesville, PA after 23 years of service.  He also taught school at Greenfield Elementary School (Wattsburg Area School District, Erie, PA) and J.T. McWilliams Elementary School, Las Vegas, NV.

He received his Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Minnesota, his Masters degree in Education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and his Principle's certification from the State University of New York at Fredonia.

He was a member of the Conneaut Lake Historical Society, served as a Big Brother and was a board member of Big Brothers and Sisters of Crawford County, attended Our Lady Queen of the Americas Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the Parish Care and Concern.  He was also a member of the PA Assn. of Elementary School Principals, the Phi Delta Kappa Professional Educator Assn. and the PA Assn. of School Retirees.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of 37 years, include two daughters, Ginger M. Melby of McLean, VA and Leigh Ann Newman (Philip) of Alexandria, VA; two sons, Eric D. Melby (Suzanne) of York, PA and Drew C. Melby (Cecelia) of Pleasanton, CA; three grandchildren, Makenzie Melby, Jonathan Melby and Sydney Hollingshead; three brothers, Lyod Melby (Beverly) of Casa Grande, AZ, Orville Melby (Phyllis) of Aitkin, MN and Trevor "Jack" Melby (Marge) of Granada Hills, CA; a step-brother, Fergus Olafson (Rheta) of Vancouver, WA and a step-sister, Elsie Jensen of Lindale, TX.

In addition to his parents and stepmother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marian Duerrstein and a stepbrother, Floyd Olafson.

Services were held with the Waid-Coleman Funeral Home.

Interment was in Our Lady Queen of the Americas Cemetery.
