Dr. David Kirkpatrick, Jr.

Dr. David D. Kirkpatrick, Jr., 89, of Meadville, died Sunday, April 21, 2013 at his residence following a period of failing health.

Dr. Kirkpatrick was born May 20, 1923 in Meadville, a son David D. and Mabelle Marley Kirkpatrick, Sr.  He graduated from Saegertown High School in 1941, Dartmouth College in 1945, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1947.  He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.

Dr. Kirkpatrick served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1950; he was recalled to serve as a ship’s physician in the Destroyer Division from 1953 to 1954.

He started his practice in Internal Medicine in Meadville in 1954 and retired from private practice in 1993.  He went on to help establish the Meadville Area Free Clinic and served as medical director there until 2008.

Dr. Kirkpatrick was an active contributor in the community.  He was a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and a Stephen Minister.  He was a member of the board of Active Aging, Inc. of Crawford County, Meadville Housing Authority, and Wesbury United Methodist Community.  He served in many leadership roles at Meadville Medical Center and the Meadville Medical Center Foundation.  He was a member of the Meadville Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, Meadville Literary Union, and the Iroquois Club.  He was the recipient of the Allegheny College Raymond P. Shafer Award in 1998 and he served as a Grandpa Reader for his daughter’s third grade class at First District Elementary School for many years.

He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Alice (Marnie) Grabe who he married December 29, 1949; four children, Mary Lynn Brubaker Geissler and her husband Larry of Marion, OH, Suzanne K. Malone and her husband Martin of Meadville, David D. Kirkpatrick, III and his wife Judy of Cincinnati, OH, and Daniel G. Kirkpatrick and his wife Allison of Rocky Mount, NC; eleven grandchildren, Christopher Brubaker, Daniel Brubaker and his wife Ashley, Julia Holzhauer and her husband Ian, Kenneth Malone, Jessica Kirkpatrick, Meghan Kirkpatrick, Travis Kirkpatrick, David Preston and his wife Dawn, Lindsay Strickland and her husband Steven, Stephen Bryant, and Austin Bryant; three great-grandchildren, Jack, Scarlett, and Peter Holzhauer; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Suzanne K. Henry; a brother, Dr. Robert Kirkpatrick; and a son-in-law, John Brubaker.

Calling hours will be Friday, May 10th from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.

A memorial service will be Saturday, May 11th at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville with the Rev. Dr. Brian Jensen, Pastor officiating.

Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.
