Dr. Fred L. Ewing, 78, of Meadville, died at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Sunday, November 4, 1990.
He was born in Corry on February 22, 1912, a son of Thomas R. and Grace Mason Ewing. He married Betty Burd on July 31, 1943. She survives.
He was a 1934 graduate of Allegheny College and a 1938 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia. Following a rotating internship at Allegheny General Hospital he began medical practice in Meadville in 1939. In 1948, he was certified a Fellow of American College of Anesthesiologists, one of the first 250 physicians in the country to be so designated.
He was past president of Meadville City Hospital Medical Staff and served as Chairman of the departments of Anesthesiology and Obstetrics. Since retirement, he has been an honorary member of Meadville Medical Center Medical Staff.
Professional memberships included: Crawford County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Assn., Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
Dr. Ewing retired November 30, 1983, having limited his practice to obstetrics and anesthesiology for most of the 44 years.
Following retirement, he volunteered daily in Winslow Medical Library, Meadville Medical Center.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years.
In addition to his wife, his is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Richard A. (Carol) Diess and Barbara J. Ewing; one son, James N. Ewing; two sisters, Dr. Ethel E. Ewing and Ruth M. Ewing, all of Meadville; one brother, Orlo A. Ewing of Corry; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald H. Ewing and Raymond J. Ewing.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
