Dr. Irwin Ross Beiler

January 14, 1883 — November 8, 1969

Dr. Irwin Ross Beiler, 86, widely known retired professor of religion and Methodist ministry, died Saturday afternoon, November 8, 1969, at Flickinger's Convalescent Home after a long illness.

A resident of Spring Street for many years, Dr. Beiler had been a professor of English Bible and philosophy of religion at Allegheny College from 1920 until he retired in 1949 as professor emeritus.  In that year, he accepted a position as visiting professor of religion at University of Miami, Florida, where he served until 1953.

Dr. Beiler was born at Lima, OH, January 14, 1883, a son of Adam Clarke and Mary Jane Davis Beiler.  He was twice married, first to Elizabeth K. Crates on June 28, 1911.  She died April 4, 1934.  He subsequently married Jessie A. Virtue of Guys Mills on July 3, 1937.

Surviving, besides his widow, are a daughter, Mrs. W. Bentley (Dorothy) Burr of Findlay, OH; five sons, A. Clarke of Severna Park, MD, Ross C. of Coral Gables, FL, Charles K. of Lake Helen, FL, David D. of Riverside, PA, and Theodore W. of Deland, FL; two sisters, Mrs. John (Alma) Rose of Schenectady, NY and Mrs. Orville (Blanche) Evans of Columbus Grove, OH; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A sister, Mrs. Ellis (Lulu) Miller preceded him in death.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
