Dr. James Willis Martin, Jr., 83, of Conneaut Lake and Briny Breezes, FL, died Saturday, August 21, 1999, at his home in Conneaut Lake.
He was born in Washington, PA, August 11, 1916, a son of James Willis and Clarissa Rankin Martin. He married Phyllis Heather, March 31, 1945 in South Bridge, MA. She survives.
He graduated from W. and J. College in 1938 and from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1942. He served with the US Navy as a lieutenant JG in the Medical Corp from 1943 to 1946. He was on a LST during the invasion of Normandy in World War II.
He started practicing family medicine at Conneaut Lake in 1948 and retired in 1987 after 30 years of service.
He was an active staff member of Meadville City Hospital, a member of the American Medical Assn. and PA Medical Society.
He was a member of the Fifth Street Presbyterian Church, Conneaut Lake.
He was the former owner of Hetherwood Farm, having raised horses, ponies and sheep. He was also an avid gardener.
He enjoyed reading, bridge and chess, and was a talented craftsman, working with leaded glass, wood carving and sculpture.
He had a pilot's license and operated his own plane for many years.
While wintering at Briny Breezes, he enjoyed playing shuffle board and growing orchids.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, William J. Martin (Deborah); two daughter, Bonnie Heather Martin of Pittsburgh and Nancy C. Coleman (Harold) of Harmonsburg; three grandsons, James J. Martin, Benjamin J. Martin and Keith M. Coleman; a brother, Jack R. Martin of Jacksonville, FL and a sister, Mrs. William (Esther) Snow of Canterbury, NH.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Willis Martin, III; a brother, William H. Martin and a sister, Mary Lou Meyer.
Services were held with the Waid-Coleman Funeral Home.
Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
