Dr. Michael Mercatoris

April 26, 1947 — February 9, 2014

Dr. Michael Mercatoris, 66, of Meadville, died Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Meadville Medical Center following a brief battle with cancer.

He was born April 26, 1947 in Meadville, a son of Morris D. and Lila A. Woolery Mercatoris.  He married Rosalie Kiebort May 1, 1971 and she survives.

Mike was a 1965 graduate of Meadville High School and a 1969 cum laude graduate of Allegheny College with a B.A. degree in Psychology.  He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.  He received his M.S. degree in Clinical Psychology in 1972 and his PhD in Clinical Psychology in 1976, both from Penn State University.  He worked in private practice in Meadville since 1979 and operated the largest private psychological practice in Northwest PA.  He dearly loved his work and looked forward to going to work every day.  Mike was currently on the medical staff at Meadville Medical Center, formerly at Northwest Medical Center, Franklin, worked as a psychological consultant and associate at the Headache Center/Neurology Institute of Western PA, was a former clinical instructor in the family practice residency program and director of the Behavioral Science Dept., family practice at Franklin Regional Medical Center, and was the former director of research and training, director of clinical services, and consulting psychologist at the Sarah A. Reed Children’s Center of Erie.

Mike was a member of the American and Pennsylvania Psychological Associations, Iroquois Club, Meadville Country Club, and Taylor Hose Company.  He was active for many years as a member of the former Conneaut Lake Yacht Club, taught Sunfish sailing for 13 years, and held a sailing camp for 3 years.

Mike was an avid reader and golfer.  He enjoyed snow and waterskiing in his younger years, including barefooting around Conneaut Lake.  He enjoyed sailing but loved sail boat racing.

Survivors, in addition to his loving wife Rosalie of 42 years, include two sons, Michael Mercatoris, III and his wife Elizabeth of Carbondale, CO and Jacob A. Mercatoris and his wife Rebecca of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, Madeline, Michael George, and Edward Mercatoris; a brother, Douglas Mercatoris of Snowmass Village, CO; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Mercatoris.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 5:30 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.

The funeral and committal service will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Glen Van Cise, Pastor of Chapmanville Community Church, officiating.
