Dr. Richard Bates

Dr. Richard Bates, 78, of Meadville, died Tuesday, January 17, 1984, at City Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Meadville on March 20, 1905, a son of Alfred J. and Bertha Sprague Bates.  He married Dorothy Lawson.

Dr. Bates was a member of the Class of 1928 of Allegheny College where he received a bachelor of science degree.  He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of West Virginia in 1931 and his medical doctor degree in 1934 from the University of Chicago.  He also was a graduate of the University of Vienna at Austria and did post-graduate work and a residency in surgery at Harvard Medical School.  He also did post-graduate work in surgery at Cook County (Chicago) Post Graduate Medical School in 1942.

Dr. Bates opened his medical practice in Meadville in 1935 when he joined the surgical staff at Meadville City Hospital.  At one time was chief of the surgical staff for the Keystone Ordnance Works.  He retired in July 31, 1981.

He was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Mary Lee) Owens of Inman, SC; a son, David L. Bates of Meadville; a brother, Arthur L. Bates of Meadville; and six grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, John L and Samuel P. Bates, and a sister, Ruth.

Services were held at Robert W. Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
