Dr. Richard L. Brown, 77, of Meadville, died at Rolling Fields Nursing Home, Conneautville, on Saturday, June 30, 1990.
He was born in Bryn Mawr on December 2, 1912, a son of Thomas C. and Vesta Sweezy Brown. He married Marian H. North on August 25, 1939. She survives.
He was professor emeritus of physics at Allegheny College. He graduated from Amherst College in 1934, later earning a master's degree from Wesleyan University in 1936, and a PhD. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1942. From 1941 until 1947, he served on the research staff at MIT in the field of acoustics.
Dr. Brown became chairman of the physics department of Allegheny College in 1947, teaching physics and astronomy until his retirement in 1978. He continued to teach frequently until 1988.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Dr. Maron B. Calderwood Mays of Gainesville, FL and Deborah L. Brown, Jericho, VT; two sons, Alan T. Brown of Erie and David L. Brown of Acton, Mass; two sisters, Helen M. Brown of Lunenburg, Mass and Florence B. Kraft of Westminster, Mass; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jessie E. Brown.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
