Dr. Samuel Erle Hoke, 53, Allegheny College physician and former Meadville plant physician of the American Viscose Corp., died yesterday at City Hospital, where he had been a patient for several days.
Dr. Hoke was born December 6, 1902, at Lititz, PA, a son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Bradley and Alice LaMar Hoke. He attended public schools in Meyersville, MD, and graduated from high school in Meyersdale, PA. Following three years of pre-medical work at Lebanon Valley College, he earned a degree from Hahnamann College, Philadelphia, in 1927, and interned at Williamsport General Hospital in 1928.
He was a member of the Medical Society of Pennsylvania and Crawford County, the American Medical Assn., and the American Industrial Hygiene Assn.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Meadville, the Kiwanis Club of Meadville and the Roundtable of Meadville.
Surviving are his widow, the former Alethea Shockey; a son, Samuel Erle, Jr. of Erie; a daughter of Mrs. Dominick Bengivengo of Rochester, NY; three brothers, LaMar of Galena, OH, Dr. Bradley Hoke and Robert Hoke, both of Salisbury, PA; a sister, Miss Elizabeth Hoke of Washington DC; and a grandson, Samuel Erle Hoke, III of Erie.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Salisbury, Somerset County.
