Dr. Vincent Grant Hawkey

October 21, 1895 — April 30, 1973

Dr. Vincent Grant Hawkey, 77, who retired last summer after 48 years as a Meadville physician and surgeon, died Monday, April 30, 1973, at City Hospital following a short illness.

He arrived in Meadville in 1924 as a partner of the late Dr. R. Bruce Gamble.  He was past president of Crawford County Medical Society, Chief of staff of the surgical staff of City Hospital, member of the former Meadville School Board for 12 years and president for two terms, and past president of Meadville Rotary Club.

Dr. Hawkey enlisted in World War I and served two years in the infantry and Medical Reserves Corps.  In World War II, He was cited by both President Roosevelt and President Truman for his distinguished service for the Selective Service System.

He was a member of Stone United Methodist Church, Round Table, Literary Union, Meadville Country Club, Iroqious Club, and Masonic orders, including Scottish Rites Bodies and Zem Zem Shrine.

He was born at Sheffield October 21, 1895, a son of Thomas C. and Elizabeth McKalip Hawkey.

He is survived by his widow, the former Grace Pancoast who lives at the Hawkey home; three daughters, Mrs. George W. (Virginia) Sceiford of North East, Mrs. Wallace I. (Suzanne) Youngs of Orchard Park, NY and Mrs. James W. (Sandra) Scatterday of Geneseo, NY; a sister, Mrs. Alice Wilbur Walter of Torrance, CA; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
