Dr. Walter C. Carpenter, practicing dentist in Meadville for 49 years and a florist for a quarter of a century, died at 6:40 p.m. yesterday at City Hospital, where he bad been a surgical patient since November 13. He was 76 years old last Monday.
The flower shop, known as Carpenters Flowers and also as Meadville Greenhouses, is located on Park Avenue, and his dental office was at his home on Chestnut Street.
Dr. Carpenter's wife, the former Florence Stem, died last February 27. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Snodgrass, associated with her father in the floral business; a grandson, Charles Chipman Snodgrass; a brother, Edmund B. Carpenter of Rochester, NY and two cousins, Ralph Carpenter of Gowanda, NY and William Carpenter of Oakland, CA.
An active local club man and Mason, Dr. Carpenter came to Meadville to begin the practice of dentistry in 1900. He was born in Warsaw, NY, he spent his early life there. Before he became interested in flower gardening, another hobby - raising bees and selling honey - helped pay his way through college.
He studied two years at the University of Buffalo, trandferring to the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia, where he received his doctor of dental surgery degree the same year he came to Meadville.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
