Duane L. Smith

December 27, 1943 — November 18, 2006

Duane L. Smith, 62, of 23564 W. Oil Creek Road, Meadville died Saturday, November, 18, 2006 at Hamot Medical Center, Erie.

He was born in Meadville December 27, 1943 a son of Albert Robert and Mary Ann McCarl Smith.  H married Joanne Graham and subsequently married Margaret “Peggy” Short October 23, 1993.

For the past ten years he was employed in the maintenance department of Crawford Central School District.  Previously, he worked for Robert Finney Logging for 14 years and also worked in farming.

He was a 1961 graduate of Randolph-East Mead High School.  He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War.  He was a member of Huidekooper VFW Post 2006 and the American Legion.  He loved the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing and playing horseshoes.  He was also an avid euchre player and claimed it was all about the “cardnology”.  He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Peggy, of 13 years, include: five children, Bonnie Jones and her husband Randy of Stevensville, MT, James Smith and his wife Michelle of Bryan, OH, William Smith and his wife Gen of Meadville, Joseph Smith and his wife Adrienne of Cochranton and Jolene Skelly and her husband Sean of Erie; two step-sons, David McGee and his wife Tina of Meadville and John McGee of Cambridge Springs; one brother, Lawrence “Sonny” Smith and his wife Geraldine of Meadville; five sisters, Joan McCain of Meadville, Rita Derby of Meadville, Audene Ehrgott and her husband Paul of Meadville, Kay McGahen and her companion Bill of Meadville and Wanda Schmidt and her husband Marcus of Loveland, CO; twenty one grandchildren, Justin, Levi, Jessica, Cody, Nicholas, Sydney, Scot, Kody, Matthew, Devanie, Wyett, Jacob, Emily, Zachary, Joshua, Adam, Michael, Brett, Darien Sue, J.T. and Stevie and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Russell G. Smith.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.

The funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Fr. Dennis Veltri, Pastor of St. Hippolyte Roman Catholic Church, officiating.

Burial with military honors will be in Smith Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
