Miss E. Gertrude Hanks, 63, Crawford County native whose services for a quarter of a century from the Peruvian government, died at City Hospital Sunday.
The tireless teacher and missionary had been a patient at the hospital here since October 18. She resigned from her most recent teaching position, assistant professor of missions at Scarrlitt College, Nashville, TN, last June because of failing health.
Surviving are a brother, J. R. Hanks of Springboro; two sisters, Mrs. W. A. Clemons of Meadville and Mrs. D. D. Kleder of Chicago, and several nieces and nephews.
Most closely associated with education in Peru, Miss Hanks nevertheless was well known as a teacher in this country - at Guys Mills, Harmonsburg, Ford City, Akron and New Castle - before she went to South America in 1920.
She retired as principle of the school in 1945, and the nation's government authorized a resolution: "x x x first, to congratulate the teacher for the fruitful and profitable educational work which she had accomplished in Peru, and, second, to express the gratitude of the government for her valuable contribution to the educational work of the nation."
Prized even more by Miss Hanks was the honor students, alumnae and teachers of the girls' school paid her when they celebrated in December 1945, the 25th anniversary of her arrival at the school.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Union Cemetery, Guys Mills.
