Edith Ellen Joel

Edith Ellen Joel, 80, of Meadville passed into heaven at Wesbury United Methodist Community, Tuesday, January 8, 2019.  She was born in Meadville, June 26, 1938, the only child of George W. and Elizabeth Jackson Joel.  Edith attended Meadville schools and Adult Basic Education classes, making lifelong friends as she continued to learn.

She attended St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (now St. Paul’s Reformed Church).  She played the piano and sang praise to Jesus Christ her Savior with the choir.  Edith was actively involved in the Meadville Senior Center.  After leaving her home, Edith was a resident at Juniper Village in Meadville where she received excellent care.  Eventually she moved into Village North at Wesbury’s Grace Health Center.  The Wesbury staff and volunteers nurtured, loved and respected Edith, enabling her to thrive in a warm family atmosphere.  She was very happy there.  At Wesbury, she worshipped at the Barco Chapel and loved to sing hymns.

Edith had worked at Imperial Carbide and the former Mead Nursing Home.  She enjoyed all kinds of activities and was an expert at assembling jigsaw puzzles.  Edith will be remembered for her incredible memory.  Her recall of names was remarkable.  She loved people and never missed a chance to compliment them.  She was a cheerful bundle of energy, relishing her role as ambassador to newcomers.

She was a faithful friend to her roommate, Mary.  Edith and Mary were close “buddies,” encouraging each other throughout the day.  Edith’s family raised many pet dogs and cats.  She delighted in wearing t-shirts showing puppies, kittens and birds.  Her stuffed animal collection was dear to her, too.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call on Friday, January 11th from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the ROBERT W. WAID FUNERAL HOME, 581 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE where the funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Brian Hasenkopf, Pastor of St. Paul’s Reformed Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.
