Edith P. Spiers

Edith P. Spiers, 89, of Meadville, died Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community.

She was born March 31, 1920 in Waterbury, CT, a daughter of the late Ellis F. and Edith Hutcheson Phelan.  She married Irving C. (Chet) Spiers, Jr. October 24, 1941 and he preceded her in death July 13, 2008.

Edith attended Wilson College, Chambersburg and was a homemaker.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Meadville where she was a former director of Christian education, elder and deacon.  She enjoyed reading, bird watching, cooking, and traveling.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie Smith of Albuquerque, NM and Nancy Baldwin of Meadville; a granddaughter, Michele Wessel and her husband Matt; a great-grandson, Noah Lee Wessel; two step-great-grandsons, Logan and Grant Wessel; and nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Greer and Jean Lambert and a brother, Robert F. Phelan.

Visitation will be Friday from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville where the memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Brian Jensen officiating.

Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville, PA 16335, Meadville Medical Center, 751 Liberty St., Meadville, PA 16335, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
