Edward Gottlieb Redman

June 25, 1908 — November 27, 2005

Edward Gottlieb Redman, 97, formerly of Ellwood City, PA and a resident of Cordia Commons, Meadville, PA since September 2001 died there Sunday, November 27, 2005.

He was born June 25, 1908 in Parnassus, PA (Westmoreland County).  He was the fourth of nine children of Reinhold Charles and Emma Gutknecht Redman.  On June 26, 1935, he married Nellie Elizabeth Mullin in New Kensington, PA.  They were married almost 65 years until his wife’s death on January 7, 2000.

In May 1927 in Pittsburgh, he enlisted in the US Army and became a member of the Twelfth United States Field Artillery stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.  His enlistment record indicated that he was a very good horseman and of excellent character.  In 1932, he joined the Department of the State Police of Pennsylvania and in February 1933, he was graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Training School.  For the next five years, he served as a State Policeman as a member of Captain Jasper Oftedahl’s Troop “D” Pennsylvania State Police Force.  Following his State Police service, he was employed as a Security Guard by the National Tube division of US Steel in Ellwood City.  During World War II, he trained as a machinist and worked at United Engineering and Foundry and at Aetna Standard.  For several years, he operated a service station in Butler, PA, and then concluded his working years as a machinist at Satec in Slippery Rock, PA.

Following his retirement, he served as President of the Ellwood City Chapter of the AARP and was associated with the “55 Drive Alive” Safe-Driving program sponsored by AARP.  He was a member of Masonic Lodge #599 in Ellwood City and the New Castle Consistory.  He had been a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ellwood City for over 65 years.

Survivors, include: a daughter, Doris Redman Foster of Meadville; a son, Edward George Redman and his wife Abigail of Morganton, NC; four grandchildren, Todd Redman and his wife Terry and Catherine Thomas and her husband Joe all of Morganton, NC, John K. Foster III of Pittsburgh and Edward Foster and his wife Mary of Beaufort, SC; eight great grandchildren, Hank and Grant Shell, Joe and Frank Thomas, Gresham and Olivia Redman and Katherine and Elizabeth Foster; a sister, Hilda Hill of Tampa, FL and a sister-in-law, Kokie Krebs of Bensalem, PA

In addition to his parents, wife and seven siblings, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, John K. Foster, Jr.

The family will receive friends Saturday, December 3rd from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 207 Spring Avenue, Ellwood City, PA with the memorial service to follow at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Martin Young, Pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Utahville Cemetery, Utahville, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of Crawford County, 448 Pine Street, Meadville, PA 16335 or Trinity Lutheran Church, 207 Spring Avenue, Ellwood City, PA 16117.
