Elmer N. Nelson

Elmer N. Nelson, 82, of 366 E. College St., Meadville, died Monday, May 18, 2009 at Wesbury United Methodist Community.

He was born in Meadville January 5, 1927, a son of the late Benn E. and Evelyn Norris Nelson.  He married Martha Rockmore July 8, 1966 and she survives.

He was a graduate of Meadville Public Schools, and a 1947 graduate of Allegheny College with a B.S. degree, and received his M.A. in 1966 from Allegheny.  He was a member of Theta Chi fraternity at Allegheny.

Elmer retired in 1991 as Executive Director of the Crawford County Office of the PA Department of Public Welfare.  For two years early in his career, he worked at the Washington Department of Public Welfare in Seattle.

He was a member of Stone United Methodist Church, Meadville Round Table, Sons of the American Revolution, United Way of Western Crawford County Board of Directors for many years, Meadville Lions Club, Past President of the Crawford County Read Program, Past Commander of the Charles Stafford American Legion Post #111, was a Veteran of World War II with the U. S. Navy, and was an Eagle Scout and involved with Scouting for many years.

Survivors, in addition to his wife Martha of nearly 43 years, include one daughter, Susan Nolan and her husband David of Trafford, and one grandchild, Kelita Elizabeth Nolan.

There are no services planned at this time.

Memorials may be made to the Crawford County READ Program, 313 South St., or the Meadville Public Library, 848 N. Main St., both of Meadville, PA 16335.
