Elsie Reitze Seeley of Meadville, 88, formerly of Conneautville, died Tuesday, June 2, 1987, at the Hillside Home after a prolonged illness.
She was born March 16, 1899, in Union Township, a daughter of George and Mary Stadler Reitze. She was educated in Meadville schools and graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 1919.
Mrs. Seeley taught elementary grades in the Murrary Hill District of Cleveland. She was put in charge of children with foreign-born parents where English was not spoken at home.
She married George W. Seeley of Conneautville, November 3, 1921. He died January 8, 1962. Mrs. Seeley was very active in civic affairs and was elected as one of the first women to serve on the Conneautville School Board in 1936 and worked to futher the Shakespeare Society of Conneautville and was its president for several terms. She was a member of Valley United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school classes there for many years.
She held the title of past president of the American Legion Aux., Means-Flynn Post 165, and was a Gold Star mother. Prior to her retirement in 1958, she was employed as secretary of Conneaut Valley Joint School District for 10 years. In addition, she was a trustee of Stone Memorial Library of Conneautville for 40 years. She moved from Conneautville to Meadville in 1978.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Horace (Luella) Trace of Abilene, TX; a son, Paul of Wellesley, MA; three grandchildren of Boston and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Wesley Reitze of Meadville.
She was preceded in death by a son, Donald, who was killed in the Normandy Invasion during World War II, and a brother, Wesley Reitze.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
