Elsie E. Smith, 85, of Meadville went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Sunday, January 17, 2021 at home surrounded by her family.
She was born April 2, 1935 in Meadville a daughter of Charles B. and Estelle Briggs Peterman. She married Carl M. Smith April 1, 1955 and he survives. They met at a dance and enjoyed dancing through life together. They would dance like no one was watching.
She was a 1953 graduate of Conneautville High School and worked for 18 years at the former Meadville City Hospital as manager of Housekeeping and Laundry. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing softball and singing around the area with the Peterman sisters for 42 years and also with the Smith Family singers for 5 years. She was a 50 year member of Conneautville Church of Christ where she worshipped and loved her God and Savior. She also cooked for several years for the Wednesday night church dinners. For the last year of her life, Elsie worked in serving God in one of her greatest ministries, playing piano and singing for her fellow residents and the caregivers at Crawford County Care Center.
Survivors, in addition to her husband Carl of 65 years, include: four children, Carleen Fowler (David) of Guys Mills, Bradford Smith (Patricia (Page)) of Streator, IL, Loretta Hamilton (Jeffrey) of Meadville and Maxine Aylsworth (Robert) of Meadville; three sisters, Gertrude Panko (Richard) of Conneautville, Pat Bailey of Lexington, KY and Judy Popham of Canyon, TX; a brother, Thomas Peterman of Meadville; 39 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and innumerable nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Josiah Fulton; two great granddaughters, Gianna and Arianna Johnson; two brothers, Russell and Charles Peterman and three sisters, Estaleta Blackhurst, Peg Taylor and Virginia Henry.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, January 20, 2021 from 3-5 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville. The funeral service will follow at 5 p.m. with Pastor Ronald Welker, Carl’s Cousin and Pastor of Penn Line Church of God, officiating. Face masks and social distancing per CDC guidelines will be followed.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the wonderful care given to Elsie by the caregivers at the Crawford County Care Center and Kindred Hospice. They would suggest memorials to either Crawford County Care Center, 20881 State Hwy 198, Saegertown, PA 16433 or Kindred Hospice, 1119 Park Avenue #7, Meadville, PA 16335.
